Retreat to a Reading Nook

March 31, 2011 by Beryn  Hammil of Beryn Hammil Designs

Create a space where you can curl up with a good book
Imagine actually finding the time at some point in your busy day to sit down with a good book you've been wanting to read. The house is quiet, the chores are done, there is nothing pressing that can't wait until tomorrow, so you pour a cup of tea or glass of wine and look forward to putting your feet up and relaxing.
Sounds nice, doesn't it?

Where do you curl up to read? How about the couch? Light's not good enough there. A comfortable chair? But where do you put your tea? There's always the bed, but the light isn't good enough there, either, and it's inevitable you'll fall asleep after reading only a few pages.

What's missing from your quiet picture is a place to read! Imagine actually having a place to fulfill this reading fantasy . . . a corner with a comfortable place to sit, a little table and a good reading light.
Another challenge after you've finished reading is where to put all the books you've read and want to keep.

FULLY PREPARED Setting up a phone and beverage choice near the book nook - as in this Marin County window seat reading corner - prevents you from having to leave your sanctuary.

Books to Movies... Red Riding Hood

March 30, 2011  by Fifi Flowers

The book by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright...

Synopsis via here

The body of a young girl is discovered in a field of wheat. Her flesh mutilated by telltale claw marks. The Wolf has broken the peace.
When Valerie learns that her sister has been killed by the legendary creature, she finds herself at the center of a dark mystery, one that has plagued her village for generations. It is revealed that the werewolf lives among them, and everyone in the village immediately becomes a suspect. Could her secret love Peter be behind the attacks on her town? Is it her betrothed, Henry? Or someone even closer to her?
As the men in the village hunt for the beast, Valerie turns to her grandmother for help. She gives Valerie a handmade red riding cloak, and guides her through the web of lies and deception that has held her town together for so long. Will Valerie discover the werewolf's identity before the town is ripped apart?
This is a dangerous new vision of a classic fairy tale, the happy ending could be hard to find.

Provence A to Z and Giveaway Winner Revealed...

March 29, 2011  by Fifi Flowers

J'adore Peter Mayle books...  Here is one I thought appropriate since we have been visiting Vicki Archer in Provence... YOU can learn MORE about the region via Provence A-Z...

More than 200 entries ranging in length from four lines to two to three pages appear on its pages, in alphabetical order, in which he discusses topics relevant to Provencal life. Although Mayle insists "It's impossible business, trying to squeeze Provence into a single volume," he's done his best. The result is a delightful education for armchair travelers--or actual ones who are heading there for a visit or have previously done so. (via HERE)

Seattle author Jennie Shortridge has published four bestselling novels set in the American West: When She Flew, Love and Biology at the Center of the Universe, Eating Heaven, and Riding with the Queen. Reading Made Easy as ABC

March 26, 2011  by Beryn Hammil of Design Tech Tonics

With restrictions on how many pounds can be carried onto airplanes, bringing books to read on your trip has become a bit of a challenge.

And while recycling magazines and newspapers is important, is it really necessary to consume so much paper?

Also, we all know that our eyes aren’t what they used to be and reading 12 point type, especially when we’re tired, isn’t fun.

Electronic reading devices, also known as “e-Readers,” is the newest and most efficient way to carry and read just about anything that’s published.

Where Do You Read?

March 24, 2011   by Jennifer Durbin of Old Bag New Tricks

This is the coziest, loveliest room. I upholstered both the sofa and chair, I dyed the fabric for the drapes and I painted the pretty pretty black cabinet. It's a real nice place to be -- nice for reading or napping. Recently I brought in a tea/art table for my grandson. We have a real nice time in here.

Inspired by a Book

March 23, 2011  by Julia of Hooked on Houses (originally posted on her blog January 20, 2011)

The Story of How “House Lust” Got Me Here

Three Januarys ago, I picked up a new book at the library called House Lust: America’s Obsession with Our Homes, and it changed. My. Life. For real. Because it talked about how some people just can’t get enough of houses–looking at them, talking about them, thinking about them. And I realized that there are other people out there like me!

The same day I finished reading the book–January 20, 2008–I practically ran to my computer and started this blog, determined to find those like-minded souls who love houses as much as I do. Because, frankly, I think my family and friends were tired of getting my constant e-mails on the topic (You’ve got to see this house! It’s CRAZY!).

I mentioned House Lust that first week and was astounded to get an e-mail from the author himself, Daniel McGinn. I had no idea that you could just mention someone you admired on the Internet and get a personal response! He not only let me interview him for another post, but he sent me two autographed copies of his book–one to give away, and one to keep.

Getting to Know Writers

March 13, 2011 by Fifi Flowers

A NEW way to get to know more about authors...  Simon & Schuster launched "Ask the Author" ...

On this site YOU can actually ask questions directly of your favourite S & S authors and WATCH them respond... all you do is click on the author and type your question... you do not have to upload video... questions are NOT answers immediately so you must check back to see if your question has been answered.

This is pretty AMAZING ... don't you think?  Wonder if other publishing houses will be doing this or are they already?  Or are they doing another form of promoting?  Do tell!

Made from Books

March 11, 2011  by Jennifer Pritchard Couchman

A new fairytale for adults commissioned by Litfest from contemporary fairy tale author, Claire Massey was premiered this Saturday 16th October at The Storey, Lancaster. Claire wore a custom-made dress made entirely from the pages of books, designed and hand crafted by Lancashire bridal designer, Jennifer Pritchard Couchman.
Using over 2500 pages from multiple copies of the recently reissued ‘Angela Carter’s Book of Fairy Tales’ the gown took three days to make and has “lots of frills, lots of folding, lots of stapling, paper mache and glue.”

Green Interior Design Review and Giveaway

March 7, 2011  by Fifi Flowers

Today we will take a look at Green Interior Design by Lori Dennis...  Anddd YOU could be the LUCKY WINNER of this book that Lori has so kindly given us.  Just LEAVE A COMMENT and YOU will be ENTERED to WIN!!!

Lori Dennis’ desire to be part of the solution to waste and pollution in the interior design and construction fields led her to write this easy to use manual for anyone wishing to create green interiors. Every aspect of residential interior design–furniture and accessories, window treatments, fabrics, surface materials, appliances and plumbing fixtures, plants, and more–is discussed from a green perspective in terms of both avoiding pollution and protecting the occupants’ health. Green building criteria are elaborated and special focus is given to bedrooms where occupants spend most of their time and are most at risk. Landscaping and landscape maintenance are scrutinized from a green vantage point. The book concludes with interviews with a number of leading designers and architects who incorporate environmental and health concerns in their projects. Lori Dennis shares checklists (such as for green criteria) and sources for materials to help readers build successful, sustainable practices.

Delicious Taste of Words

March 5, 2011  by Betsy of The California Flower Girls

Since I have been in school I have had a lot less time to be in the kitchen cooking or baking. It has been a hard thing to cut back on because in many ways being in the kitchen creating something new is my therapy and I love a house filled with the smell of something delicious to come.

Tonight I really needed a study break and it needed to be spent in the kitchen. Whatever I decided to cook or bake it had to meet these requirements:  most importantly, I did not want to clean up a huge mess; it had to be easy; it had to be quick; it had to taste good; it had to be something I haven’t made before.

I  love spending time online reading recipes. Awhile back, while looking for something else, I came across a recipe for Crescent Roll Dough Palmiers made with canned crescent rolls . It has been in my head to try them out so I gave them a shot.  I didn’t have a can of crescent rolls but I did have a can of buttermilk canned biscuits and decided to improvise.

Where Do You Read?

March 4, 2011  by Arina Manuela

"I  simply adore reading and I do it everywhere: on the bus on my way to the office, home, nestled in a comfy armchair with a cup of hot chocolate in my hand or when summer comes, on the grass under the willow tree by the lake, but my favourite spot for reading is the attic. I put some Chopin and I read. It`s so serene up there and when I raise my eyes from the pages I see the astonishing deep blue sky. It is magical: Chopin, a good book and the sky above me.
Keep on reading."
