My Book Stack

November 30, 2011  by Robin from CA

Hi Fifi!

It was so much fun to see my post on Reading is Fashionable!  About a week ago I took a photo of my book stack but I'm only getting around to sending it to you now...

From top to bottom: Grace Interrupted (2nd in the Manor House Mystery Series); Sentenced to Death; Murder Under Cover (3rd in the Bibliophile Mystery Series); The Help; Out of the Night; I Feel Bad About My Neck; An Echo in the Bone (last in the Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon).

Since taking this picture I've finished The Help (one of the best books I've read in a long time), Murder Under Cover (the weakest of the series so far), and am almost done with Grace Interrupted (love Julie Hyzy).  These and Sentenced to Death are all cozy mysteries and that's really my favorite genre.  I've been reading Out of the Night for awhile.  A true story of a man who was part of the communist party as a young man in Germany long before WWII and what happened leading up to, going through and after WWII that changed him.  I have to stop reading it every so often because I start to have bad dreams about it.  I Feel Bad About My Neck (written by Nora Ephron of Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail fame) is a re-read for me but it's just so funny.  To be read by women "of a certain age" - that is to say probably over 40.  Then, if you're a fan of Diana Gabaldon and Jamie & Claire you will recognize the last epic novel in the Outlander series.  I just haven't had the time to read it yet.  This fall is my time.  Jamie & Claire deserve my full attention.

My Book Stack

November 17, 2011 by Alice @ Farewell, Office

My book stack is a little unconventional, and I know some readers would be horrified. I still read print books, but have embraced the new e-book trend, even writing a series on choosing the right e-reader and a bi-monthly article highlighting free Kindle e-books. If you are "e-reader friendly" I hope you'll enjoy my picture.

fashioned these bibliophilic baubles for just a few bucks each.

To assemble your own, cut velvet ribbon ($1.59 per yard; mjtrim.com) into nine-inch lengths. Purchase ribbon clamps the same width as your ribbon (from $1.50 per 10 pack; artfire.com), then use flat-nose jewelry pliers to affix clamps to both ends of each ribbon. Finish by attaching charms, trinkets, or vintage earrings (from 25 cents each; eebeads.com) to the clamps with jump rings ($4.12 per 100 pack; amazon.com).

The Silver Boat by Luanne Rice

November 11, 2011  by Fifi Flowers

About the Author...

Luanne Rice is the bestselling American author of twenty-six novels. She often writes about nature and the sea, and many of her novels deal with love and family.

Born in New Britain, Connecticut, Rice is the eldest of three daughters born to an English teacher and a typewriter salesman. Her first published poem appeared in the Hartford Courant when she was eleven, and her first short story was published in American Girl when she was fifteen. She studied Art History at Connecticut College but dropped out when her father became ill. She began to write, working as a maid in Newport, Rhode Island, a researcher at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., and a whale researcher and deckhand in Woods Hole, Massachusetts to support herself. Her debut novel, Angels All Over Town, was published in 1985.

In 2002, Connecticut College awarded Rice an honorary degree and invited her to donate her papers to the college's Special Collections Library.

Several of Rice's novels have been adapted for television, including Crazy in Love for TNT, Blue Moon for CBS, Follow the Stars Home and Silver Bells for the Hallmark Hall of Fame, and Beach Girls for a Summer 2005 mini-series on Lifetime.

Rice divides her time between New York City and Old Lyme, Connecticut. (bio via HERE)

The book...

From the beloved New York Times bestselling Luanne Rice comes a heartwarming yet heart-wrenching portrait of three far-flung sisters who come home to Martha's Vineyard one last time. Their mother's beach house is the only place any of them ever found true happiness and they need to begin the difficult process of letting go. Memories of their grandmother, mother, and their Irish father, who sailed away the year Dar turned twelve, rise up and expose the fine cracks in their family myth-especially when a cache of old letters reveals enough truth to send them back to their ancestral homeland.

Transplanted into the unfamiliar, each sister sees life, her heart, and her relationship to home in a new way. But how do they let go of a place that contains the complicated love of their imperfect family? Without the house, where will they be together?

The novel is a season on Martha's Vineyard; a mission to Ireland; a cast of friends, including one wildly off-the-grid Zen genius; passionate love in the surf; and three very different sisters with lives filled with beauty, sorrow, and deep love they'd never been quite sure they could trust. The Silver Boat is Luanne Rice at her very best, complete with her singular talent for capturing a family in all its flawed complexity. (synopsis via HERE)

Book of the Moment

November 2, 2011  by Barnes & Noble

Book of the Moment - Steve Jobs - A Visionary Life
Perceptive, inventive, innovative - these and other telling adjectives have been applied to the late Steve Jobs in the wake of his recent death. But, for all their aptness, they failed to deliver a full portrait of the visionary Apple leader. Now, with the publication of Walter Isaacson's eagerly awaited biography, readers have one.
