My Book Stack

February 1, 2012  by Ellen Perry

This photo may give an indication of how much I love France. I read just about anything I can get on the subject. I especially enjoy memoirs of foreigners who have made France their home for a time. Some are better than others; but it’s always interesting to see a different perspective on the process of adjusting and adapting to a new culture and country. There are so many interesting life stories out there.

Cook Your Way Through the S.A.T. by Charis Freiman Mendel

January 26, 2012  by Fifi Flowers

Reading is Fashionable received a copy of a book that helps kids in a FUN way study for S.A.T.s... since receiving this book I have had my teen children (13 and16) and some of their friends look at the book... and they liked the combination of food, cooking, eating... not wild about studying... BUT if they had to study this seemed like a GOOD way to do it...

The Book...

“Cook Your Way Through The S.A.T.” is a DELECTABLE way to master frequently-asked S.A.T. vocabulary. Serve your RAVENOUS appetite for learning with this INNOVATIVE book. Each of the 99 easy, enjoyable recipes is matched with a fun-fact blurb containing 10 S.A.T. words. Wondering why onions STIMULATE the LACHRYMAL glands or how Gorgonzola cheese ACQUIRES its blue color? Memorizing S.A.T. vocabulary doesn’t have to be an ARDUOUS task. Retain 1000 words while SIMULTANEOUSLY becoming an ADEPT chef. This book is a great tool for ASSUAGING those pre-S.A.T. fears. (synopsis via HERE)

The Author...

Charis Freiman-Mendel created "Cook Your Way Through the S.A.T. to fulfill her 7th and 8th grade homeschool art requirement, her need to study for the S.S.A.T. and her desire to be actively involved in cook.  She attends Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. (bio via the author's book)

Book to Movie

January 25, 2012  by Fifi Flowers

The Book...

Meet Oskar Schell, an inventor, Francophile, tambourine player, Shakespearean actor, jeweler, pacifist, correspondent with Stephen Hawking and Ringo Starr. He is nine years old. And he is on an urgent, secret search through the five boroughs of New York. His mission is to find the lock that fits a mysterious key belonging to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11.

An inspired innocent, Oskar is alternately endearing, exasperating, and hilarious as he careens from Central Park to Coney Island to Harlem on his search. Along the way he is always dreaming up inventions to keep those he loves safe from harm. What about a birdseed shirt to let you fly away? What if you could actually hear everyone's heartbeat? His goal is hopeful, but the past speaks a loud warning in stories of those who've lost loved ones before. As Oskar roams New York, he encounters a motley assortment of humanity who are all survivors in their own way. He befriends a 103-year-old war reporter, a tour guide who never leaves the Empire State Building, and lovers enraptured or scorned. Ultimately, Oskar ends his journey where it began, at his father's grave. But now he is accompanied by the silent stranger who has been renting the spare room of his grandmother's apartment. They are there to dig up his father's empty coffin. (synopsis via HERE)

Ocean Sea by Aleccandro Baricco

January 20, 2012 by Demie of Paraphernalia

I read this book for the first time ... maybe fifteen years ago, in my mother language (Greek) and was caught by it. By its storytelling... the way it was written... the weirdness in it. I have gone back to Almayer Inn, in my mind all these years .... and this is exactly what makes a work of art, whether it is a book, a painting, a theater play or a movie, important to me. The fact that it sets in motion a river of  thoughts which flows in my head for a long time. Perhaps even for many years to come ....

So now I read the Ocean Sea again, in English this time, and I am caught again. Of the "alternately playful and deeply serious," exciting novel, and the ocean's hypnotic power.is a very sensitive book at times..." In fact, all you need is a little sensitivity to understand that any blind corner is a possible ambush, and two roads that cross are a perfect geometrical violence, enough to frighten anyone who possesses real sensitivity and all the more to her, who was not exactly possessed of a sensitive spirit, but to put it in exact terms, possessed by un uncontrollable sensitivity of spirit forever exploded in who knows which moment of her secret life- the merest scrap of a life, young as she was- only to return to mysterious ways to her heart, and her eyes, and hands and all over, like an illness, although it was not an illness, but something less, if it has a name it must be lighter than air, say it and it`s already gone. " page 9

A very sharply funny book at others. (like when Professor Bartleboom is checking in Almayer Inn...)" The Professor`s pen slipped voluptuously between the sheets.  Ismael Adelante Ismael Prof. Bartleboom- The first Ismael was my father, the second my grandfather.- And that one?- Adelante?- No, not that one there... this one.- Prof. ?- Mmm...- It`s Professor, isn`t it? It means Professor.-What a silly name.- It`s not a name.... I am a Professor, I teach, do you see? I walk through the streets and people say, Good morning, Professor Bartleboom, Good evening, Professor Bartleboom, but is not a name, is what I do, I teach...- It`s not a name.- No.- All right. My name is Dira.- Dira.- Yes. I walk through the streets and people say, Good morning, Dira, Good nitht, Dira, You `re looking pretty today, Dira, What a nice dress you`re wearing, Dira,  You haven`t seen Bartleboom by any chance, have you?... " page 14/15

But most of all a mysterious book, as the sea is for many of us... page 55 and I am enchanted by every single word in this book. and the way every single word is used.but be aware Ocean Sea is ... " ...the ideal liniment for the hydrophobic, the melancholy, the impotent, the anemic, the lonely, the wicked, the envious, and the mad. "

Enjoy!

My Book Stack

January 17, 2012  by Ellen Perry

This photo is of some of my favorites. I am a huge fan of Sarah-Kate Lynch, as you can see. She is from New Zealand and some of her books can be difficult to find here, but well worth the hunt online for overseas booksellers. All of these have been inspirational or thought-provoking in a lasting way. I also love how pretty they are.

Pastry Paris by Susan Hochbaum

January 13, 2012  by Amazon Email

Pastry Paris: In Paris, Everything Looks Like Dessert

About the Book...

Pastry Paris is a collection of photographs of the world’s most enticing pastries set against the background of one of the world’s most iconic cities. The confections are taken out of their display cases and photographed “on location” at Paris’ best-known sights and everyday streetscapes, illuminating the visual and cultural connections between the city, its architecture, its culture, and its wildly beautiful desserts. Each entry is captioned, and the back of the book serves as a guide to the pâtisseries where each of the pastries is created, with addresses, phone numbers, and métro stops. The quirky, often humorous pairings of desserts and their hometown is a vicarious trip to that delicious city, where art and beauty can be found in everything from doorknobs to petit fours, a city that takes its desserts as seriously as its music, sculpture, and painting.
